DEVELOPMENT
In 1961, on behalf of the International Red Cross, Georges Hartmann, as a young doctor was responsible for the welfare of Tibetan refugees who had immigrated from Tibet into the highlands of Nepal. He made a significant contribution to their integration within Nepal. Deeply impressed by this experience he became a friend and helper of the Tibetan people for ever.
After his death in 2003, myself, Serena Hartmann, I took over the remaining tasks in his spirit. During years many friendly connections have developed with people in remote regions of Nepal, such as Khumbu-Everest, Mustang and Dolpo. On this basis, the establishment of the Kalasha Foundation in 2020 is the highest asset of our activities.
The name „Kalasha“ represents the symbol of the Buddhist water vessel with which the holy water is dispensed during religious rituals.
HISTORY
Over the past ten years we have helped to educate young Nepali people through various sponsorships. Our social aid was realized in good cooperation with various other non profit organizations being active in Nepal.
The second equally important commitment was obliged to the improvement of medical health care of the population in Nepal. We helped to find full access to health care and guaranteed financial support for people with economic difficulties. Yet we should increase our effort to provide life-saving emergency treatment even in remote areas of the country.
In 1961 Georges Hartmann, on behalf of the ICRC, made a film documenting the Tibetan refugees with their lived experiences immigrating from Tibet over the high passes into the kingdom of Mustang. Their numbers and their state of health were recorded in detail, the settlement in the high valleys planned and controlled by the government to allow best integration in the local population. This original film was revised in 2014/15 and completed to the audio document „Tibetan Refugees – Nepal Himalaya 1961“.
